While many of us are still getting back into the swing of normal life after the holiday pause, the red carpet season is all systems go with one of its key events, the Golden Globes, returning for its 81st awards ceremony. In a cinematic year that gave us Barbenheimer and breakout indie darlings like "Past Lives" — as well as a red carpet hiatus due to the writers and actors strikes — the red carpet was guaranteed to be a who’s who of beloved, stylish stars bringing their very best fashion game.
They didn't disappoint: key trends included red-carpet red, high-shine satin, glittering silver metallics and interesting back details. Here, the standout looks from the night.
Rosamund Pike
Looking every bit as elegantly eccentric as the bored bourgeois lady of the house she plays in "Saltburn," Rosamund Pike opted for a tea-length black lace dress from the Dior Fall 2019 couture collection, complete with an apple-shaped headpiece that ensconced her entire face.
Greta Lee
The best actress nominee and star of the low-key heartbreaker Past Lives donned a cream satin gown by Loewe (a fashion-forward brand not often worn on the red carpet) which featured some quirky details including a twisty back and embellishments at the shoulder pins. Is it reminiscent of a bedsheet? Yes, but in the best way possible.

Taylor Swift
Time’s person of the year is off to a roaring start to 2024: Swift's smash-hit concert film is nominated in the brand new category for cinematic and box office achievement. For the occasion, she wore a shimmery green sequined dress with a strappy back by Gucci.
Emma Stone
The double best actress nominee (for "Poor Things" and "The Curse") floated through the red carpet in a silvery-nude dress by her go-to Louis Vuitton. The gown was subtle, but striking, thanks to the floral embroidery in pale pastel throughout.
Barry Keoghan
The "Saltburn" breakout star wore a mismatched checkered suit by Louis Vuitton, and went all in on accessories — including a belt chain, brooch, pearly necklace and single earring. It’s a lot but it works.
Margot Robbie
You’re the star and producer of one of the year’s biggest films (and the leader of the pack in Globe nominations). Of course you wear "Barbie" pink. But Margot Robbie’s gown didn’t just channel the colour; it was a close remake of a 1977 Barbie look and created by Armani Privé. Will she continue to lean into her character for the rest of the red carpet season?
Helen Mirren
The sugary lilac of Helen Mirren’s Dolce and Gabbana look (complete with a dramatic overcoat) is a fun, unexpected match for the star’s signature icy-hued hair.
Dua Lipa
Mermaid Barbie left the pink to Margot Robbie, and went for a dramatic and interesting gown by Schiaparelli that features a velvet bodice embellished with gold and silver “bones.”
Pedro Pascal
Dress pants, an embellished turtleneck and…a sling for his broken arm. Even with this unplanned accessory, Pedro Pascal is one of the best-dressed gents on the red carpet.
Julia Garner
The "Ozark" star donned a disco-ball sparkly Gucci column dress with a bodice solely made of suspender-like straps. She kept the rest of the ensemble simple, just her signature platinum ringlets and minimal jewels.
Gillian Anderson
We often get good accessories on the red carpet. Diamond jewelry worth hundreds of thousands of dollars? Certainly. Wild shoes? It happens. But a brilliant bag? Almost never. Gillian Anderson’s rounded top-handle bag was one of the evening’s standout details. But the real story is her white Gabriela Hearst dress, which might look simple at first glance, but is in fact embroidered with vulva motifs appropriate for her character on "Sex Education."
Selena Gomez
High-shine satin is one of the red-carpet’s biggest trends tonight. Gomez's custom Armani Privé number features a dramatic high-low hem in shimmering scarlet, but reads a bit busy overall.
Sheryl Lee Ralph
We love a dress that makes the red carpet photographers take landscape shots to capture the full drama of the train, and the high contrast of this black and yellow Safiyaa gown stands out.
Julianne Moore
The best supporting actress nominee for "May December" proves that you can never go wrong with a classic red gown by Bottega Veneta. We feel obligated to tell you that Moore’s gown features pockets.
Meryl Streep
Miranda Priestley, is that you? The star is not normally one to make big red-carpet fashion statements, so this sequined skirt suit worn over a bow blouse by Valentino felt like a welcome upgrade. And no one wears glasses better.
Florence Pugh
At this point, Florence Pugh and sheer dresses is one of Hollywood’s most enduring relationships. Florence’s red gown is by her go-to designer, Valentino, and dotted with floral appliqués.
